making nature prints

We did a fun art project yesterday I thought I would share with you all.  It involves the use of a mallet, which makes it immediately a great project according to the boys.  We started by scouring the yard for any flowers or leaves we liked.  Once we gathered a good collection, we set to work.

First we set out a painting board, and placed a notecard on top,  followed by the plant, and some scrap canvas fabric.

Next comes the fun part!  Take your mallet, and pound all around your plant.  Some plants worked better than others, especially for my slightly overzealous pounders… and juicy plants resulted in a pile of mush on our paper.

After we finished a few cards, we realized that we really liked the look of the prints on fabric as well.  So, we continued the process but placed scrap paper underneath instead of notecards.

It was a rather fun project, and the boys really enjoyed not only pounding with a mallet, but identifying plants and making some pretty cool art!

Great project. The look of pride on Orion’s face is just priceless! :)
